Question 1

Where should I start for specialty coffee in Montpelier?

Accepted Answer

Downtown Montpelier has the highest concentration, all within a few blocks. Capitol Grounds on State Street roasts in-house and has anchored the scene for decades, The North Branch sits on the same street with a café, tea, and wine program overlooking the Winooski River, and Birchgrove Baking on Elm Street pairs coffee with a scratch bakery. Cafe NOA on Putnam Street is a short walk from the main strip.

Question 2

Which coffee roasters are based in the Montpelier-Barre area?

Accepted Answer

Carrier Roasting Co. in Northfield is the region's standout, an award-winning roaster built on transparent sourcing and direct farm relationships. You can drink their coffee at their East Street café or on the espresso bar at Front Seat Coffee in Hardwick. Capitol Grounds also roasts its own beans in Montpelier, and Espresso Bueno in Barre rotates specialty roasters from around the region.

Question 3

How spread out are the cafés around Montpelier and Barre?

Accepted Answer

Central Vermont's coffee scene covers more ground than a typical city. Montpelier and Barre sit about seven miles apart and each has a walkable downtown cluster. Beyond those two, Northfield and Waitsfield are a fifteen to twenty minute drive southwest, and Hardwick is roughly half an hour northeast. Plan on driving between towns rather than walking.

Accepted Answer
