Which Rome neighborhoods have the best specialty coffee?

Prati, near the Vatican, has a couple of standout specialty cafés, and Pigneto to the east is the city's most creative coffee neighborhood. You will also find excellent spots in Ludovisi near the center, Ostiense, and Flaminio. Rome's specialty scene is still compact, so it is spread across the city rather than concentrated in one district.

Is it hard to find third-wave coffee in Rome?

Rome is famous for its traditional espresso culture, so specialty coffee is less widespread here than in Milan or northern Europe. But a growing group of dedicated cafés and roasters, including Faro, Pergamino Caffè, and Aliena Coffee Roasters, now serve pour-overs and single origins. With a little planning you can enjoy excellent third-wave coffee alongside the city's classic bars.

What is the difference between a Roman espresso bar and a specialty café?

A traditional Roman bar serves a quick, dark-roasted espresso or cappuccino, often standing at the counter, and it is woven into daily life. Specialty cafés focus on higher-grade beans, lighter roasts, and brewing methods like pour-over and filter, with more attention to origin and flavor. In Rome you can enjoy both, sometimes within a few steps of each other.

What makes specialty coffee in Rome unique?

Rome's specialty coffee scene features local roasters and cafés that prioritize quality beans, expert brewing techniques, and unique flavor profiles. Many cafés source directly from farms and offer single-origin options that highlight the distinct characteristics of different coffee-growing regions.
